Basilica di Santa Croce

Some pictures and information that I learned in my Intro to Renaissance Art class Thursday about the Church:

The church is a Gothic style.

Michelangelo's tomb. His body is not actually in there, but buried somewhere under the church. This was to prevent people tampering with his body. The beautiful tomb represents his 3 skills: architecture, painting, and sculpting.

Galileo's tomb. In the middle he is shown with his telescope and orb, which represents the Earth. The ladder above his head is his family's symbol. Galileo is also buried underneath the church, but parts of him are scattered in different places too. I also learned that Galileo was quite the Cassanova in his time; he had many female conquests.

Unfortunately, they were doing renovations at the front. I saw a woman working on some paintings.

Pictures of the flood in 1966. You can see in the center and upper right pictures they had to carry out  Cimabue's Crucifix, which did get damaged (see the last picture below).
